Query by BravesWings: Why do certain ethnic groups think its okay not to tip at dining establishments?
I’m not a waiter or waitress but I’m close friends with a bunch and one particular issue I always listen to about is how more typically than not, african american people (this isnt supposed to be racist, just curious), are inclined to both not leave any tip at all, or go away like a few bucks on a $ 60 invoice. Do they not realize that ideas are in which waiters/waitresses generate their income, or are they that selfish/cheap that they just dont treatment?
(and these are at rather wonderful restaurants like Olive Backyard, not some inexpensive diner)
I’m not declaring Olive Backyard is a wonderful five star restuarant My level is that the waiters/waitresses surely arent deserving of getting stiffed on bills that might end up $ 60-one hundred (in comparison to $ 15-20 at a low-cost diner)
Also, im not speaking about when it is in fact warranted (bad services). I am speaking about when the services is great, or even best.

Yeah, my black close friends say why really should you suggestion them, they make a salery… if they don’t like the shell out they need to get a task some place else… me on the other hand,, I suggestion on average 20% at minimum….. I am Latino

Uhmmm…you think Olive Garden is nice LMAO. *DEAD*. First off I never give under 15% and I go to five star establishments. Not some cheap family style restaurant. LOL Also I tip according to service. if the service is outstanding I gladly give more than the standard. if the service is so-so then Ill give the standard. If the service is garbage Ill write on the tip line DON’T LOCK DOGS IN HOT CARS. LMAO.
Maybe the are not good waiters. I’m BLACK and will tip according to service. I don’t stick to any 15% standard. I will gladly tip 50% if the services warrants it. But if they suck, I will just as quickly leave $ .06 and have done it before.
I usually tip 35% and Olive Garden is the Mcdonalds of “nice restaurants.”
You said you heard about this, where did you hear it from? More often than not, many of what is heard turns out to be false, especially if it is not from a credible source. I will tip accordingly, if the service is good, then 15-20%, if not, well less.
Your question and your view of a ‘nice’ restaurant is laughable. Furthermore, why are you asking the question when you yourself said that you are not a waitress or a waiter. Tipping is a way of telling the waitperson that he/she did a good job in serving you. I, myself, do not tip just because it is suppose to be the norm, just like all waitpersons believe that they deserve a tip no matter what kind of service they provided.
unless you’ve waited tables before, a lot of ppl don’t even know that servers hardly ever make over $ 3.00/hr. they don’t even know that tips are a necessity. i’ve had to tell people i’ve been out with how much waiters make, and they are sooo surprised and then they start tipping. those that don’t know assume that they are giving extra money on top of their sizable wages…its just not the case.
maybe since people feel like black people don’t tip, they only do a half ass job at waiting when they come to a black table, so they get less of a tip and the cycle just continues. I dunno, I’m black and I don’t calculate my tip, it depends on how well I’ve been serviced.
It depends on their attitude we had a rude waiter at a place called Sole Mio, he was very nasty and he reeked of cigarette smoke. He thought he was in for a nice big tip seeing as how we purchased so much. No Sir!!!!! He got a 5 dollar bill and we told the manager. This year we decided to go their for V Day, we had much better service and our waiter was extremely happy with his 50 dollar tip, we also told the manager how pleased we were and that we would be returning.
Most people, regardless of race, base the tip on the service they recieve. If i personally get bad service, the waiters not gonna get a dime out of me. I base the tip i give solely on how good the service was. I don’t give tips jus because I’m supposed 2. And frankly, I don’t care if tips are the only way they make money because I go 2 a resturant 2 eat. Not 2 make sure a waiter gets enough money 2 pay their bills. But I’m not speaking for the entire black race. I’m only speaking 4 myself. People need 2 remember that it is not mandatory 2 give a tip. When I was a waiter, I was thankful 4 every tip I got.
I don’t think it’s a ethnicity thing. College students eat out at nice restuarants but they can only afford so much so tipping usually is out of the question.
